Do I need to use seals on my fire door?

Fire doors are a critical component of building safety, and it's essential to ensure they are properly fitted with the appropriate seals. These seals are designed to expand under heat, filling the gaps between the door leaf and frame to prevent the passage of smoke and fire to other parts of the building.

Intumescent seals, which expand when exposed to heat, are typically placed into grooves machined in the door frame. These seals play a crucial role in containing fires by sealing the gap between the door and frame. It's important to use the same type of seals around the door to maintain consistency and effectiveness.

In addition to intumescent seals, combined intumescent and smoke seals are available to provide added protection against cold smoke. Smoke seals may be required by building regulations in certain circumstances. Acoustic seals may also be necessary in specific environments to reduce sound transmission.

When fitting seals, it's important to ensure that uninterrupted intumescent strips are installed into the frame or lining, where possible.

The gap between the door and frame is also crucial, with the gap size being suitable for the intumescent seal fitted. Generally, the gap should not exceed 3mm along the long edges and across the top of the door leaf. The gap at the bottom of the door may vary depending on whether smoke seals are required.
